Born Louis Alexandre Raimon, he was 16 years old when he went to work in a Cannes hair salon in 1938. He earned the nickname "prince of coiffure" in the 1940s for his flair and opened his own shop in Paris in 1957 where he won the industry's top fashion awards in the 1960s, the BBC reported.

Among his celebrity clients were Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and Lauren Bacall, the British network said.
