LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- British actor Christian Bale is in talks to play Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who tracked notorious bank robber John Dillinger in the early 1930s.

Bale, who is best-known for his roles in "Batman Begins," "Rescue Dawn" and "3:10 to Yuma," is in negotiations to co-star in Michael Mann's upcoming Dillinger picture "Public Enemies," Variety.com reported Friday.

The entertainment industry trade paper cited a source close to the project who said Bale would play Purvis, the lawman who led a manhunt for the infamous gangster.

Johnny Depp is set to play Dillinger in the movie scheduled to begin shooting in March.
