NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Britney Spears is apparently in Mexico, contrary to widespread reports that she headed to New York after hearing her family was planning an intervention.

Spears was hospitalized for drug testing and a psychological evaluation last week after police were called to her home because she refused to give her two toddler sons back to their father at the end of a court-sanctioned visit.

At the request of Spears' family, TV advice dispenser Dr. Phil McGraw went to visit her in the hospital before she was released Saturday, however, he has since been criticized for speaking publicly about their meeting.

Media reports this week suggested the 26-year-old pop star is suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder and that her family is planning an intervention to get her the help she needs any way they can.

Sources close to Spears told the New York Daily News the singer saw the reports and took off with photographer boyfriend Adnan Ghalib on a private jet, flying Wednesday night from California to New Jersey.

TMZ.com later reported, however, that Spears was videotaped riding in a car with Ghalib in Mexico after numerous media outlets -- including TMZ.com -- were given misinformation about her itinerary.
