LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Jamie Spears, the embittered father of Britney Spears, doesn't know what to do about the latest drama in the U.S. pop singer's life, a source said.

The unidentified source said that as the "Toxic" singer was recovering at a Los Angeles hospital, the elder Spears was confused regarding what steps he should take to help his daughter in her increasingly troubled life, People magazine reported Saturday.

"(Jamie) thought he understood what was going on," the source said. "He doesn't know what to do. Everyone is trying to figure out the best thing to do, but who knows what that is now."

The pop singer was held temporarily on a mental lockdown after being involved in a bitter custody dispute with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

The source told People that in an attempt to assist his daughter recover a normal life, the elder Spears spoke with TV host Dr. Phil McGraw, who also met with the pop singer before her discharge Saturday.
