LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- The newest technology and electronic gadgets will be on display in Las Vegas this coming week at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show.

The Washington Post reported Saturday that the annual event will not only showcase the best the $148 billion industry has to offer, but also will unveil more environmentally friendly products.

With the industry having been labeled a major energy drain, top electronics officials said the annual event will mark a significant attempt to alter that viewpoint.

"It's pretty ambitious, considering we're larger than the Super Bowl and all the political conventions," said Consumer Electronics Association Chief Executive Gary Shapiro, whose group is hosting the event starting Sunday.

Shapiro told the Post the event itself will be 'greener' thanks to the use of energy-efficient light bulbs, biodegradable plastic utensils and recycled carpet.
