Comedian Dodd 'fine' after hernia surgery

LIVERPOOL, England, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Famed British comedian Ken Dodd was forced to postpone two performances, but said he was doing fine after a successful hernia operation.

The 80-year-old entertainer was hospitalized shortly after performing a sold-out show at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall.

"It's what you call a strangulated hernia. They brought me to the Royal Liverpool Hospital and did the operation right away," Dodd told the BBC, adding he was doing "fine" and planned to return to the stage next month.

"As I was being wheeled down to surgery I was telling jokes. I was given an anaesthetic needle, I started off telling a joke and for the first time in my life I don't remember the end of it."

Performances in Birkenhead and St. Helens that were slated to take place this week have been rescheduled for next month.
