SHANGHAI, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Chinese cinema great Sun Daolin has died in Shanghai at the age of 86.

Daolin acted in more than 100 movies before turning to directing in the 1980s and making four movies, including "Thunderstorm" in 1984, the Shanghai Daily reported Sunday.

Daolin, who died Saturday in Shanghai's Huadong Hospital, made his screen debut in the "Big Reunion" in 1948 and starred in films such as "Early Spring in February," "Radio Never Faded" and "The Family."

In 2000, he directed "Zhan Tianyou," a film about a Chinese railway engineer in the early 20th century. That film won "Best Story" in the China Movie Awards, the highest honor in China's movie industry.

Daolin is survived by his wife, opera singer Wang Wenjuan.
