
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Sean Penn and his wife Robin Wright Penn filed divorce papers in a California court on separate occasions earlier this month, People.com reported Friday.
The couple, who married in 1996, have two children together -- Hopper Jack, 14, and Dylan Frances, 16.
Both Sean Penn and Robert Wright Penn stated "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split and each asked for joint legal and physical custody of their sons in the court papers they filed, People.com said.
A hearing on the case is scheduled for April 21.
Robin Wright Penn is best-known for her roles in the movies "The Princess Bride," "Forrest Gump" and "Moll Flanders."
Sean Penn won a best actor Oscar for "Mystic River." "Into the Wild," a film he wrote and directed, has been nominated for numerous awards this season.
The couple co-starred in the films "Hurlyburly" and "She's So Lovely."
