LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- After dropping out of the film "State of Play," Hollywood actor Brad Pitt is now in talks to star in Terrence Malick's big-screen drama "Tree of Life."

Pitt would replace Heath Ledger who was slated to headline the movie, which was set to begin production in the spring, Variety.com reported.

Although he would have earned $20 million against gross to star in "State of Play," Pitt probably won't be paid anything upfront if he signs up for "Tree of Life," the trade paper said.

Sean Penn, who starred in Malick's "The Thin Red Line," is also expected to take a supporting role in "Tree of Life."

The film's plot has been shrouded in secrecy.

Malick's other films include "Badlands" and "The New World."
