VATICAN CITY, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Famed Italian filmmaker and stage director Franco Zeffirelli, who is also a Roman Catholic, has offered to give Pope Benedict XVI a makeover.
But, so far, the Vatican has not been in touch, the BBC said.
Zeffirelli, who has helmed lavish film productions of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet," told La Stampa he thinks Pope Benedict, with his cold image and showy clothes, needs a new look.
The BBC said Zeffirelli had been hired by the Vatican as a designer for the staging of numerous papal events during John Paul II's reign.
Zeffirelli, 84, told La Stampa he would jump at the chance to be the new pope's image consultant.
"If they gave me an official supervisory role, I would dedicate myself to it full time," Zeffirelli said.
"I know (Joseph) Ratzinger personally," he added, using the pope's pre-pontiff name. "He is very attentive to the importance of how the sacred is represented."
