WGA announces awards nominees

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The Writers Guild of America, mired in a strike against producers, has announced the radio and television nominees for its annual awards ceremony.

Nominated in the category for TV drama series are the writing staffs of "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Mad Men," "The Sopranos" and "The Wire."

Short-listed for the comedy series prize are the scribes behind "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Entourage," "Flight of the Conchords," "The Office" and "30 Rock."

In the running for the new series award are the writers of "Damages," "Flight of the Conchords," "Mad Men," "Pushing Daisies" and "The Sarah Silverman Program."

Earning nods for comedy, variety or talk series are the writers of "The Daily Show," "The Colbert Report," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "Penn & Teller: Bullshit," "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "Saturday Night Live."

Nominated for radio news -- regularly scheduled or breaking -- are "The Passing of the Scooter" written by Tom Sabella for CBS; "Tributes" written by Gail Lee for CBS; and "World News This Week" written by Maryanne J. Pryor for ABC.

Nominated for the prize for radio news -- analysis, feature or commentary -- are "Passages" written by Gail Lee for CBS and "Success: A Father's Definition" written by Jerry Edling for KNX, Los Angeles.

Film nominees will be announced Jan. 10. The WGA will be presented Feb. 9 in Los Angeles and New York.
