MIAMI, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Famed Cuban TV personality Delfina Lujan de Macias, who later enjoyed success as a fitness trainer in Miami, has died of Alzheimer's disease at age 84.
Macias' son, Mario, said his mother had kept her affliction hidden from the outside world so she could present a healthy and vibrant image to the public, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.
''You have to think of what it was like for this Amazon who ran though life in 4 1/2-inch spike heels,'' Mario said. "She didn't want to go where someone might recognize her. She didn't want to be seen old.''
After enjoying great success in her native land with the show "Gymnasia Rhythmica with Professor Delfina Lujan," Macias eventually relocated to Miami and opened a fitness salon for women.
Once dubbed "the lily of steel" by a Cuban newspaper, Macias served as an inspiration to her clients up until her Nov. 20 death.
The Herald said that in addition to Mario, Macias is survived by her husband, Dr. Mario A. Macías y Betancourt.
