NEW YORK, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Jam Master Jay most likely knew and trusted his killer because he didn't use the gun he was carrying the night he was slain in New York, a witness said.
The rap icon, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was shot five years ago but no arrests have been made.
Uriel (Tony) Rincon was with Mizell the night he was killed and said he saw Mizell had a gun with him.
"Had there been immediate animosity or if there was a problem, they wouldn't have been that close," Rincon told the New York Daily News. "His gun was right there. He would've been blazing."
Rincon said he didn't see who shot Mizell because he bent over to pick up his ringing phone as the gunmen entered.
"It had to be somebody he knew," Rincon said to the newspaper. "I wish I saw ... because it would be over. I told (detectives) everything I could tell them. I wish I could tell them more."
Derrick Parker, a retired New York police detective who had served as a liaison between police and witnesses, told the Daily News the case could be solved if authorities offer those close to Mizell protection in exchange for their testimony.
