LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Justin Timberlake won the prize for favorite male pop or rock artist at the 2007 American Music Awards show in Los Angeles Sunday.

Also nominated in the category were Akon and Timbaland.

Timberlake could not attend the event, but accepted his award via satellite.

"This is awesome. Thank you," Timberlake said. "The requirements are you have to be male and an artist and, luckily, I'm both, so I qualified and I won. I can't believe it."

"High School Musical 2" earned the AMA for favorite soundtrack album, beating out "Dreamgirls" and "Hairspray" for the honor.
