CHICAGO, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Hundreds turned out at Chicago State University to remember the life of former professor Donda West, mother of hip-hop star Kanye West.

Donda West died Nov. 10 in California following cosmetic surgery. Authorities in Los Angeles launched an investigation into her death after learning the doctor who operated on her had convictions for alcohol-related offenses and at least two major malpractice settlements.

West spent 24 years as a CSU professor and served as head of the university's Department of English, Communications, Media Arts and Theatre, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

In a memorial service on campus Friday, she was remembered through dance, song and testimonials for her laughter and her passion for teaching.

"Our family, the English department, has lost one of our own," said Parneshia Jones, who was one of West's students.
