LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Hollywood actress Winona Ryder has signed on to play young Spock's mother in the upcoming "Star Trek" film, Variety.com reported Friday.
"Heroes" star Zachary Quinto is set to play Spock.
To be directed by "Lost" and "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams, the movie is about the iconic space travelers' Starfleet Academy days.
Chris Pine has been cast as Capt. James Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Eric Bana as the villain, Nero, the trade paper noted.
Ryder recently completed "The Informers" and "The Last Word" and is in pre-production on "Private Lives of Pippa Lee."
She has previously starred in "Girl, Interrupted," "The Crucible," "The Age of Innocence" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula."
Jane Wyatt played Spock's mother in the television series.
