NEW YORK, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A house in Dix Hills, N.Y., where John Coltrane once lived is being restored to its former glory to serve as an honorary museum for the famed jazz musician.
The New York Daily News said Sunday that after nearly being demolished, the Dix Hills home where Coltrane lived during the last three years of his life is on its way to becoming a shrine for the iconic jazz saxophonist.
To help fund the restoration of Coltrane's home from 1964 until his death in 1967, local supporters are holding a special charity musical entitled "Hear Our Song" next weekend.
While Saturday's performance may take place in Dix Hills' Candlewood Middle School, it will include talent straight from Broadway in an effort to help support the new Coltrane museum. the Daily News said.
Those funds will be vital for the restoration, Friends to the Coltrane Home founder Steve Fulgoni said, as the total cost of the effort could exceed $1 million.
"The home really has become a symbol of Coltrane and a place that many people want to see restored," Fulgoni told the newspaper. "The outpouring of support has really been overwhelming - and worldwide."
