BERGEN, Norway, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- British singer Amy Winehouse has appealed a fine for marijuana possession in Norway because she fears it will affect her ability to work in the United States.
Winehouse didn't understand that accepting a fine in Norway is tantamount to pleading guilty to the offense, which could affect her ability to work in the United States," Oleg Kvelstad, her lawyer in Norway, told People magazine.
Winehouse, her husband Blake Fielder-Civil and hair stylist Alex Foden were arrested Oct. 18 in Bergen and charged with possessing 0.25 ounces of marijuana.
They were held overnight in separate jail cells and released after paying fines, which Fielder-Civil and Foden are also appealing.
Winehouse alleges she didn't understand the details of the documents she signed because they were written in Norwegian.
"This is an appeal of errors police made in the case," Kvelstad told People, adding Winehouse's case will probably go to trial if she is permitted to withdraw her acceptance of the fine.
Winehouse and her husband have made international headlines in the past year while reportedly battling addictions to drugs and alcohol.
