Streep to portray Julia Child in film

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Actress Meryl Streep is set to play culinary icon Julia Child in Nora Ephron's screen adaptation of Julie Powell's book, "Julie & Julia," Variety.com said.

In the new film, Amy Adams will play a frustrated temporary secretary who dreams of being a renowned chef and who pursues a year-long quest to cook all 524 recipes in Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," the trade paper said.

Ephron is adapting the screenplay from Powell's book, "Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen" and is also attached to direct the movie.

Ephron has penned the screenplays for "My Blue Heaven," "When Harry Met Sally" and "Hanging Up" and has written and directed the movies "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail."

Oscar-winning U.S. actress Streep, who starred in the 1983 film "Silkwood," which Ephron also wrote, will next be seen in "Lions for Lambs," opposite Tom Cruise and Robert Redford.

Adams, who was nominated for an Oscar for "Junebug," also appears in the upcoming big-screen drama, "Charlie Wilson's War."
