BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Sally Struthers has replaced fellow 1970s TV icon Penny Marshall in the new stage comedy "Sheldon & Mrs. Levine" at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, Calif.

Marshall was "forced to resign from the cast due to illness," Playbill.com reported.

Struthers took over the role of the overbearing mother in the Sam Bobrick-Julie Stein comedy, which began previews Oct. 17 and officially opened Oct. 26. The five-week engagement is slated to run through Nov. 18.

Struthers won two Emmy Awards for playing Archie Bunker's daughter, Gloria, on the ground-breaking TV sit-com "All in the Family." She most recently has been seen in the TV shows "Still Standing" and "Gilmore Girls."

Marshall, known for directing films such as "Riding in Cars with Boys," "A League of Their Own" and "Big," became a household name when she starred in the TV sit-coms "The Odd Couple" and "Laverne and Shirley."
