NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- New York actor Ethan Hawke said he loved working on Sidney Lumet's new film "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" but added he found the role exhausting.
Hawke's character in the drama, which co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney is bullied, terrified or distraught for most of the movie.
"I was elated the day it was over," Hawke told UPI in New York recently. "I hated filming the movie. I loved working with these guys. It was really special. But he is a miserable guy to play. There isn't a scene that isn't somehow emotionally complex. A lot of movies, you have two or three scenes that are emotionally complex and the rest of the time you are running down alley ways."
Hawke said a project like this makes him appreciate his own life.
"I'd get home at 5 o'clock ... pick my kids up from camp and we'd walk home together and everything seemed so blissful, eating ice cream. It was so lovely, any time anyone was nice to you ... I remember feeling the same when I did this play, 'Hurlyburly;' no matter how depressed I was, I wasn't more depressed than Eddie was," he said.
