Strike threat looms over Broadway

NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A possible strike by Broadway stagehands could cost New York $5 million a day in lost business, The New York Daily News said Thursday.

Contract talks between stagehands and theater owners have stalled, possibly paving the way for a strike that would close 22 of Broadway's 39 theaters.

Members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local One, have been without a contract since July.

"Broadway is our number one tourist magnet," said Kathryn Wylde, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Partnership for New York City. "All New Yorkers should urge the stagehands and theater owners to get it together."

Theater owners have put $20 million aside to help struggling shows get through a possible shutdown. Famous theater district establishments like Sardi's Restaurant are also making contingency plans.

"It's not only going to be us, it'll be the hotels, the parking garages, the taxis, the pretzel guys," said diner manager Sean Ricketts.

No negotiations were scheduled and a union spokesman said the mood was "somber" Tuesday after the union countered the owners' offer with what it called its final offer.

"Local One is doing everything in its power to keep the lights burning on Broadway," said spokesman Bruce Cohen.
