'Leave it to Beaver' turns 50

NEW YORK, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- "Leave it to Beaver," the quintessential 1950s family sit-com, is celebrating its 50th birthday.

TV Land is marking the occasion with a 24-hour "Beaverthon," which starts Saturday night with a showing of the rarely seen pilot episode, Newsday reports.

The pilot stars Barbara Billingsley and Jerry Mathers in their iconic roles of June and the Beaver Cleaver, but features Casey Adams instead of Hugh Beaumont as dad Ward and Paul Sullivan rather than Tony Dow as Beaver brother Wally.

To get fans in the spirit of the occasion, TVLand.com is featuring "Best of Beaver" clips on its Web site, along with streaming video of the pilot and four other episodes, a photo gallery, "Beaver" trivia and a chance to win DVD sets of the show, Newsday said.
