LOS ANGELES , Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Sally Field won the prize for best lead actress in a drama series at the 59th annual Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Field earned the award for her portrayal of the Walker family's matriarch on the freshman ABC series, "Brothers & Sisters."

Also nominated were Patricia Arquette from "Medium," Minnie Driver from "The Riches," Edie Falco from "The Sopranos," Mariska Hargitay from "Law & Order: SVU" and Kyra Sedgwick from "The Closer."

Calling the cast and crew of her show a "big ol' family," Field dedicated her third career Emmy to "all the mothers of the world.

"May they be seen; may their work be valued and raised and especially for the mothers who stand with open hearts and wait. Wait for their children to come home from danger and harm's way and war," said Field.
