LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Britney Spears' attorney says the U.S. singer is attempting to ignore an overwhelming wave of public criticism to focus entirely on her children.

Attorney Laura Wasser said that with Spears drawing increasing criticism for her performance on last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards, the mother of two is attempting to turn all her attention to her family, People magazine reported Friday.

"Yes. I think she just wants to be a mom, and both of her kids' birthdays are this week," Wasser said, "and I think she would've liked to celebrate with them without having to worry about the entire nation – the entire world – being concerned about what's going on with her personally and her custody battle with Mr. (Kevin) Federline."

Wasser's comments Friday came after another hearing in the custody dispute between Spears and Federline, her ex-husband and aspiring singer.

People magazine said the case will go before a family court judge Monday as part of Federline's attempt to gain more time with the couple's two children.
