'Mauritius' begins previews in N.Y.

NEW YORK , Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Preview performances for the New York premiere of Theresa Rebeck’s dark comedy, "Mauritius," have begun at Manhattan’s Biltmore Theatre.

A co-production of the Manhattan Theatre Club and the Huntington Theatre Company, the play stars F. Murray Abraham, Dylan Baker, Bobby Cannavale, Kate Finneran and Alison Pill.

The Huntington Theatre Company won the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Production for the world premiere staging of the play this spring.

With an official New York opening night scheduled for Oct. 4, the show is helmed by Tony Award-winning "Doubt" director Doug Hughes.

"Mauritius" is the latest offering from the acclaimed author of "The Scene," "Bad Dates" and "Omnium Gatherum," for which Rebeck and her co-author were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

In the play, which marks Rebeck's Broadway debut, Jackie (Pill) and Mary (Finneran) are half-sisters whose mother's death leaves them in possession of a rare stamp collection -- and with a dilemma regarding who actually owns the cache, and which of three men (Abraham, Baker and Cannavale) should be trusted with its sale.
