Imus defamation suit dropped

NEW YORK, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A defamation lawsuit filed in a New York court against radio personality Don Imus has been dropped, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Rutgers University basketball player Kia Vaughn offered no explanation for why she opted not to go through with the lawsuit less than a month after she filed it.

The case stems from Imus's on-air description of her team as "nappy-headed hos" last April, which was broadcast on WFAN-AM Radio and MSNBC television.

Named in the suit were Imus, his sidekick, Bernard McGuirk, and corporate radio and television partners.

Vaughn's lawyer couldn't be reached by the Post for comment and Imus' attorney declined to discuss the matter.

However, McGuirk's lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said the suit had no chance of succeeding had Vaughn pursued it because she wasn't mentioned by name.

"The suit was absolutely ridiculous," he told the Post, adding that the remarks were "clearly parody." "We were gearing up to file a motion to dismiss."

Imus apologized for the comments in the wake of a media firestorm, however, he was still fired from his job.
