LONDON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Paris-born filmmaker Roman Polanski no longer plans to direct "Pompeii" because of a delay in the shooting schedule, the BBC reported Tuesday.

"I put a lot of work and energy into the development of 'Pompeii,' so it is not without regret I have to decline my further involvement," the Oscar-winning director said.

The $130 million, special effects-laden screen adaptation of Robert Harris' blockbuster novel was expected to begin shooting in Italy this summer.

"In order to ensure that a film of this caliber and scale is produced in the manner required, the producers have pushed back the film to a time that will accommodate the production needs," said Patrick Wachsberger, spokesman for the financiers Summit International.

"While we are saddened that Roman will not be available to direct the film, we know we will work with the renowned filmmaker and our friend in the near future."

Screen Daily said the 74-year-old Polanski was unable to commit to the postponed shooting date.
