'Check On It' tops BMI awards

Producer Sean Garrett and rapper Slim Thug's hit "Check On It" was named Song of the Year at the Broadcast Music Inc. Urban Awards in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Producer Sean Garrett and rapper Slim Thug's hit "Check On It" was named Song of the Year at the Broadcast Music Inc. Urban Awards in Las Vegas.

Rappers T.I., Mr. ColliPark and Ne-Yo took Songwriter of the Year honors at Friday's Urban Awards at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino.

The three stars had a total of four songs among them on BMI's most-performed list during the past year.

Producer of the Year honors went to rapper-producer Pharrell Williams, and EMI Music Publishing was named Urban Publisher of the Year.

A special BMI Icon tribute honored Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons, who gained fame with the rap group Run DMC.
