TORONTO, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Tobey Maguire, who has played Spider-Man in three big-screen adventures, may star in the new "Robotech" sci-fi franchise.

Warner Bros. Pictures recently secured the rights to the 1980s anime classic about giant robots and alien invasions.

Maguire said he planned to produce an upcoming film version of the show through his Maguire Entertainment production company. He is also considering playing the lead, the Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

There has been a surge of interest in robot flicks since "Transformers" was declared a blockbuster this summer.

Last month, Regency picked up the rights to another 1980s anime series, "Voltron,"

the Hollywood Reporter said.
