ROME, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Famed Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani will retire after presenting his last collections in Paris, ANSA reported Tuesday.
Valentino's last pret-a-porter collection will be shown in October, while his final haute couture collection is scheduled to debut in January, a statement from his fashion house said.
During his storied career, Valentino -- he is known by his first name -- dressed Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy and Sophia Loren.
A three-day event celebrating his career was held in Rome last July.
In a letter announcing his retirement, Valentino called it "a magic moment, one which certainly can never be repeated."
"It would be impossible to equal the emotions and joy I felt for the friendship and consideration that was shown to me on that occasion," he said. "Thus, I believe this is the perfect time to say good bye to the world of fashion. As the English say: ‘I'd like to leave the party when it's in full swing.’"
Valentino said he intended to remain active in his retirement, revealing plans to create and support institutions which promote the study of design and conserve the art of fashion.
