LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- "American Idol" has gone musical, as "Idol" producers created "The Next Great American Band," with an elimination format similar to its singing counterpart.
Airing on Fox network beginning Oct. 19, the judges include Goo Goo Dolls singer John Rzeznik, percussionist Sheila E. and Australian TV personality Ian Dickson. "New Zealand Idol" host Dominic Bowden serves as the host, E! News reported.
Following the formula used by "Idol," Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Dickson will narrow the field of hopefuls from nationwide competitions to 10 semifinalists, who will perform each week before a studio audience.
The judges can offer critiques after each performance but, as with "Idol," viewer voting will determine which acts stay and which act goes home each week.
The bands must demonstrate a range of ability, including performing covers of songs by established artists to showing off their original work.
The winning group lands a record contract with 19 Recordings.
