Havel, National Theatre at odds over role

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Former Czech President Vaclav Havel and his country's National Theatre are at odds over his demand that his wife star in his latest stage drama.

The Czechoslovak Press Agency said Havel admitted Saturday he told theater officials he wanted his wife to take on the lead role in the drama "Leaving," but that his request was rejected by theater officials.

Havel added that while he respected theater officials' decision not to hire his wife, Dagmar Havlova, his new drama would likely never be performed at the Czech theater.

Havel defended his decision to make the demand, saying his wife was the motivational force behind "Leaving."

"She was present when I was writing it in the USA some months ago.She lived it along with me. I wrote it for her. I imagined her being in it. We wanted to return to the theater together," he said.

Havlova has been in nearly 50 theatrical productions during her acting career, CTK reported, along with enjoying parts on both television and the big screen.
