LOS ANGELES , Aug. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. actress/comedian Janeane Garofalo has signed on to appear in the acclaimed real-time Fox TV drama, “24,” the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

It should make for an interesting work environment since Garofalo is an outspoken liberal and critic of the Iraq war, and the show’s co-creator/executive producer, Joel Surnow, jokingly describes himself as a "right-wing nut job," the trade paper noted.

Garofalo, who has appeared on TV’s "The West Wing," as well as in the movies, "Wet Hot American Summer" and "Reality Bites," will play a government agent on "24" in the show’s upcoming seventh season.

It won't be the first time the actress has played a woman of the law. She has also carried badges in the films "Clay Pigeons," "Cop Land" and "Big Trouble."

Broadway star Cherry Jones was added to the cast last month. She will play the new president on the show, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as U.S. counter-terrorist hero, Jack Bauer.

Production on the new episodes is slated to begin Sept. 10.
