Comic books to bring Shakespeare to life

LONDON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A new series of comic books set to be released by a British company will bring the works of William Shakespeare to a new audience.

Classic Comics has created comic books based on the most famous works by the Bard of Avon and will soon release the literary-yet-artistic products in an attempt to reach students who find the late 16th to early 17th century author boring, The Daily Mail said Friday.

While the comics, which begin with a new rendition of "Henry V," have been approved by the National Association for the Teaching of English, some are less accepting. Some members of the Queen's English Society contend the comic books likely will do little to increase interest in Shakespeare and therefore will not be educational.

"Pupils may just enjoy the cartoons and not connect it with Shakespeare and they won't be much of a contribution to education," society member Dr. Bernard Lamb said.

The newspaper said the official launch of the "Henry V" comic will occur during the next school year.
