ROME, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Sources told ANSA they were unsure Tuesday when Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti would be released from the oncology ward of Modena University Hospital in Rome.
Pavarotti, 71, had been undergoing treatment of pancreatic cancer for the past year. He was hospitalized Friday with a fever attributed to an infection.
His wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, earlier said her husband was getting "better" and would soon be discharged but no exact date was given, ANSA said.
She had told reporters last month that Pavarotti was recovering from cancer and getting ready to record an album of duets.
However, his daughter, Guiliana, was quoted by media saying her father was wheelchair-bound and waiting to die, ANSA said.
The tenor last performed on March 13, 2004, at the New York Metropolitan Opera in "Tosca."
