MODENA, Italy, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti has been hospitalized in his hometown of Modena in northern Italy.

Hospital officials confirmed the 71-year-old international opera star was admitted, but declined to specify why, the BBC reported Thursday. A local Italian newspaper reported the singer had pneumonia.

Pavarotti, plagued with ill health during recent years, had canceled several concerts last year after undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer.

In June, his manager said Pavarotti was recording a new album of classical religious music, scheduled to be released early next year.
