KENT, England, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A British collector bought a pair of John Lennon's famous "granny" sunglasses --sans lenses -- but auction organizers won't reveal the winning bid.
Buyers from around the world expressed interest in the glasses, given by Lennon to his Japanese translator while the Beatles were in Tokyo in 1966, TheLondonNewspaper.com reported Wednesday. As is custom in Japan, the translator removed the lenses when Lennon was shot outside of his New York apartment Dec. 8, 1980.
"We can't reveal the figure because of a confidentiality agreement with the buyer," said John Warner, sales and marketing director of the specialist musical memorabilia auctioneer 991.com, based in Kent, England.
The Web site received the frames as part of a larger collection from a U.S. collector.
