NEW YORK, July 25 (UPI) -- Ted Koppel, whose coverage of the 1980 Iranian hostage crisis evolved into the U.S. late-night fixture "Nightline," will receive a lifetime achievement Emmy.

Koppel will be presented the award Sept. 24 during the News and Documentary Emmys program in New York.

Koppel spent more than 40 years with ABC News, notably with "Nightline," which he anchored until he left the network in 2005. Now he's managing editor of Discovery Channel and host-executive producer of "Koppel on Discovery," Variety reported Wednesday.

Previous recipients of the lifetime achievement Emmy include PBS' Bill Moyers and NBC anchor Tom Brokaw.
