Discovery Channel to launch green program

SILVER SPRING, Md., July 24 (UPI) -- Coming to the Discovery Channel family: Planet Green, a 24/7 channel about environmental issues from fashion to food and how they affect the U.S. consumer.

Scheduled to debut in late 2008, Planet Green will take in a range of eco-issues, targeting the "conscious consumer," Variety reported.

"You always hope to be an early adopter and obviously there's a need this channel is addressing," Eileen O'Neill, Planet Green president and general manager, told Variety. "I think that, in terms of being relevant and impactful, the time is just right now."

Capturing the most buzz is "Eco-Town," produced by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Craig Piligian. The series will record efforts to rebuild Greensburg, Kan., leveled by a tornado last spring, in a ecologically sustainable manner.

"We do think ('Eco-Town') is a really strong television opportunity, along with an opportunity to make a difference," O'Neill said in the Variety article. "Not only for this town, but also to showcase what green technology can do for everyone's environment."
