Primetime Emmys announced

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 19 (UPI) -- Newcomers "Heroes," "Ugly Betty" and "30 Rock" joined longtime favorites as contenders Thursday when primetime Emmys were announced in North Hollywood, Calif.

Absent from the top categories for programming, however, were "Desperate Housewives" in the outstanding comedy category and spy thriller "24" as top drama.

Cable channel HBO collected the most nominations overall with 86. Its presentation of Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," which chronicles how American Indians were displaced as the United States expanded west, led all shows with 17 nods.

"The Sopranos," which ended its run on HBO this season, pulled in 15 nominations.

Nominated for outstanding comedy series are "The Office," "Entourage," "30 Rock," "Two and a Half Men" and "Ugly Betty."

For outstanding drama, the nominees are "Boston Legal," "Grey's Anatomy," "Heroes," "House" and "The Sopranos."

Fox will televise the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards Sept. 16 in Los Angeles.
