HOLLYWOOD, July 18 (UPI) -- Studio event planners in Los Angeles are spending a little more green to make movie premieres a little more green.
Hollace Davids, Universal's senior vice president of special projects, was charged with coordinating one of the studio's largest events ever -- a 4,500-person premiere for "Evan Almighty." Its director, Tom Shadyac, wanted his production and the premiere to be green.
"I've been involved in environmental issues for 20 years," Davids told Variety, "and to now have a mandate to do this at work is great."
Rickshaws shuttled guests from the theater to the party at Universal. Tables featured fruit centerpieces and live saplings that could be taken home. Goodie bags, stuffed with efficient light bulbs from Universal's parent company GE could be re-used as shopping bags.
Also, lumber was donated to Habitat for Humanity and left-over food was given to area missions.
"It's creeping into the way we are doing business," Davids said of going green.
Events are more eco-friendly at 20th Century Fox as well. The upcoming "The Simpson's Movie" premiere will feature an array of recyclables: compost-able cups made from corn, plates and cutlery of sugar cane, and biodegradable trash bags.
