LOS ANGELES, July 12 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has announced an investigation into allegations that Paris Hilton got special privileges while she was in jail.
The union representing sheriff's deputies says guards at the county jail reported the hotel heiress and reality television star was treated far better than most inmates as she served a sentence for violating probation in a DUI case, The Los Angeles Times reported.
Hilton allegedly got unlimited access to a cordless telephone, a new jail uniform and mail delivered personally by a captain in the department. Most inmates have to wait in line to use pay telephones and get their mail from an inmate trustie, while many wear uniforms that have seen previous use.
The internal affairs bureau is handling the investigation.
"We want to make sure the department looks into these matters in an objective and thorough way," said Michael Gennaco, chief attorney for the Office of Internal Review. "Whatever allegations of special treatment are reported, we will ensure there is an appropriate inquiry and report the results of those reviews."
