LOS ANGELES, July 10 (UPI) -- The defense team for music producer Phil Spector tried to answer witness testimony in a Los Angeles courtroom that Spector said women should be shot.
Former security guard and one-time New York police officer Vincent Tannazzo was allowed to testify for the prosecution during the defense phase of the trial, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. The trial resumed Monday after a 10-day holiday break.
Spector is charged with the 2003 shooting death of Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra mansion. The defense contends that Clarkson accidentally killed herself.
Tannazzo, now retired, described how when working security for a party thrown by comedian Joan Rivers, Spector made obscene comments about women and said, "They all deserve a bullet in their head."
Under cross-examination, Tannazzo was asked why he did not report the incidents to police.
"I had other things on my mind," Tannazzo said.
The defense then presented David Stark, a Los Angeles Fire Department paramedic, who testified that he smelled alcohol on Clarkson's breath when he treated her in December 2001.
Expected to return to the stand Tuesday was playwright John Barons, who testified Monday about firing Clarkson from a play.
