Storms halt royal birthday cruise

July 6, 2007 at 2:45 PM   |   Comments

OSLO, Norway, July 6 (UPI) -- The long-planned birthday cruise for Queen Sonja ran aground in southern Norway, victimized by lousy weather.

The royal yacht Norge, the king's vessel Horten and the royal Danish yacht Dannebrog remained at anchor, riding out the storm, Aftenposten reported Friday.

The entourage was to have sailed along some of the most scenic waterways in Norway during the cruise marking the queen's 70th birthday.

Palace officials said they hoped some of Friday's activities, including an evening stroll through the historic center of Arendal, could proceed.

The cruise's destination is the royal summer home at Magero on the island of Tjome.
