VALENCIA, Calif., June 29 (UPI) -- The mother of American pop singer Britney Spears is "brokenhearted" over a rift in her relationship with her daughter, a family friend said.
Lynn Spears "has cried her heart out" about the matter, the friend told People magazine.
Photos Thursday showed the pop star handing papers to her mother outside a studio trailer in Valencia, Calif., and then leaving the set where her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, 16, was filming her Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101."
TMZ.com said Spears handed her mother a letter from an out-of-state attorney. The Web site reported the letter asks Lynn Spears to stay away from Spears' sons Sean, 1, and Jayden, 9 months, if she is taking medications that could cause impairment.
When asked what the papers were, Lynn Spears said: "It's a love letter. She did not serve me."
The friend said the mother "is brokenhearted. She wants her baby to be OK and to bring her grandkids home to Kentwood (La.) and raise them in a normal environment."
The friend, who asked not to be identified, said she thought the rift began when Spears' family became involved in her checking into a rehab clinic this year.
