Virgin Festival reward for 'Band' winner

WARREN, N.J., June 13 (UPI) -- The wireless network Virgin Mobile USA is set to launch "Book the Band," a competition that will reward an emerging band with a Virgin Festival performance.

Through partnership with MTV2 and Kyocera Wireless, "Book the Band with Virgin Mobile" will take five emerging bands and allow them the chance to become an opening act at the popular festival, a Virgin Mobile USA press release said Wednesday.

Scheduled to perform at this year's Virgin Festival Aug. 4-5 are the Beastie Boys, The Police and The Smashing Pumpkins.

"Book the Band" will debut on MTV2 Friday and weekly segments will air until the final voting period ends July 20.

The five contestants for the opening act spot at the festival are Cold War Kids, The Higher, Mute Math, Say Anything and the Seattle band Aiden.

"Virgin Mobile shares our passion for music, and together we are excited to put the power with the fans to determine which up-and-coming band deserves to make it to the main stage," MTV executive Tim Rosta said of the campaign.
