NEW YORK, May 21 (UPI) -- The creepy, kooky Addams family is heading to New York's Broadway for the 2009-10 season.
The grand-scale musical, based on the cartoons of Charles Addams, will be capitalized for more than $10 million by producer Elephant Eye Theatrical in Chicago, Variety reported Monday.
Addams' cartoons about the ghoulish-but-likeable Gomez and Morticia Addams and their family appeared for more than 50 years in the New Yorker. The cartoons also were the basis of a television series and two movies.
It hasn't been determined whether the stage production will receive permission to include the familiar TV theme song.
Composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa will write the songs, while Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice will provide the book. Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch will direct and design.
"This property has great potential," Elephant Eye producer Stuart Oken said. "It's an iconic title. We have both the advantage and the responsibility of having these characters that people all think they know."
Addams died in 1988.
