HOLLYWOOD, May 17 (UPI) -- Competitors Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis will vie for the "American Idol" title next week as Melinda Doolittle was eliminated from the Hollywood stage.
Doolittle, despite wowing the judges with covers of Whitney Houston, Peggy Lee, and Ike and Tina Turner, was shown the door by popular vote Wednesday, E! News reported.
"Congratulations to you two," judge Simon Cowell told Sparks and Lewis. "My commiserations, Melinda, 'cause you are one heck of a singer."
More than 60 million fan votes favored Sparks and Lewis, giving "Idol" its third straight male-female final on Tuesday.
Doolittle, Sparks and Lewis each sang three songs in this week's competition: one picked by "Idol" judges, one by record producers and one of the individual competitor's choosing.
