New York native's Andy Warhol tribute

NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- New York native Jack Dowd has created a 5-foot-8, 300-pound statue of Andy Warhol for SoHo's Father Fagan Park.

Dowd created the life-sized bronze statue because he thought the late artist was interesting and to mark the 20th anniversary of Warhol's death, the New York Post reported Sunday.

"I'm intrigued by (Warhol)," said Dowd, 69. "I'm surprised no one did anything to remember his death (Feb. 22, 1987), considering what a larger-than-life figure he was in New York. I equate him to Elvis, in a way."

The sculpture, which is currently in Sarasota, Fla. but will be moved to New York next month, depicts Warhol crossing his arms in his signature wig and glasses. Dowd said it took him a month to sculpt the work out of clay before casting it in bronze.
